Inspired by Facebook's decision to include 58 new gender choices and gender specific products like Dove Men+Care or BIC FOR HER pens, CHOICES is a short film that encourages viewers to ask questions about how gender identity is constructed. When do we have to choose our gender? And who actually benefits from gender identifications?
My Roles: Videographer / Production Designer / Design Researcher / Speculative Designer / Screenwriter / Social Critic
The Problem: We were challenged to design a speculative film that extrapolates a popular trend into the future as commentary on current conditions. Diving into the trend of gendered branding, we wanted to create a visual story that encouraged critical thinking about the construction of gender and how it influences identity.
The Results: After our final screening, CHOICES was selected for inclusion in Parsons' HOW THINGS DON'T WORK exhibition, based on the socially critical design work of Victor Papanek.
